What is Airbnb and how to find property using Airbnb in Bangkok?

Airbnb is a platform for booking entire homes, apartments, and rooms where people can find properties for their vacation and book them for short or long terms, depending on their needs.

In Airbnb, property owners are referred to as hosts, and they can be individuals or companies, with the majority of cases involving individual hosts.

Booking a property on Airbnb is simpler than ever.

Step 1: Log on to Airbnb

Step 2: Type your destination, here – Bangkok.

Step 3: Enter preferred check-in and check-out dates.

Step 4: Enter the number of people who will be accommodating the property.

Step 5: Hit search.

Voila! You’ll have the list of properties based on your search query. Now, you can view all the property details one by one and book them if you like it.

The booking experience is very simple and straightforward. You can book the property by paying some advance amount or paying in full; it depends on the host.

Difference between Airbnb and Hotel room booking? Which is the best in Bangkok?

Airbnb:

As I mentioned earlier, most of the properties are managed by individual hosts. This is the case anywhere around the world with Airbnb. Since it is managed by hosts, there won’t be many formalities or inconveniences when you check in or check out, as most of them are handled online, including your identity verification. Here are some pros and cons based on my experience.

Pros:

  • Privacy: You’ll have your own privacy, as there won’t be any staff coming to knock on your door often. The property is entirely yours once you check in.
  • Self-check-in & check-out: Once you reach the property, most of the time you won’t be meeting the host. You can just take the key from any specified location provided by the host. Similarly, for check-out, you can simply drop the key in the specified location. Varies from country to country; in Thailand, I stayed in two properties and had the same procedures.
  • Flexibility: Hotel rooms usually accommodate only a couple of people per room, whereas with Airbnb, customers who come in odd numbers, like 5 or 7, can easily plan their stay for a budget-friendly accommodation.

Cons:

  • You are on your own: Once you check in, you’ll have to maintain the property on your own; there won’t be staff coming in to clean your property when you leave for sightseeing. This can be a pro or a con for some people; it all depends on the individual’s preference.
  • Food: Very few hosts provide complimentary breakfast or even food when needed. Since this is not a hotel, you’ll have to buy food from outside. Yes, you can order food and have it delivered to your doorstep in Bangkok.

Hotel rooms:

For hotel rooms, let’s take Booking.com as an example. You can find a variety of hotel rooms, etc. These are typically managed by a company 99% of the time, in general. This is also the case in Bangkok.

When using Booking.com, you can pre-book hotel rooms or confirm bookings by paying the full amount in advance. Most of the time, verification formalities are done in person.

Pros:

  • Cancel anytime: You can cancel the booking without having to pay most of the time, essentially offering free cancellation. This is the case with Booking.com and may vary from platform to platform.
  • Complimentary breakfast: You can enjoy a complimentary breakfast when you book rooms in hotels. Hotels often provide this as a way to attract customers.
  • Assistance & support: Once you check-in, you need not worry if you need any assistance. The hotel staff will help you sort it out right away, from helping you get a taxi to visiting attractions, and cleaning your room, etc.

Cons:

  • In-person check-in: You’ll have to meet the receptionist to check-in and complete formalities such as ID verification, etc. In some hotels, there may be strict timings for check-in; for example, the receptionist may not be available if you arrive during the midnight or after their work hours. This is the case not only in Bangkok.
  • Privacy concern: If you don’t like someone knocking on your door frequently, this could be a con for you when staying in hotel rooms. In some hotels, staff might come in to clean your rooms when you leave during the day.

Which Bangkok Airbnb property did I book?

I booked a 2BHK property for 2 nights in Belle Grand Rama 9, located in Soi Rama 9 soi 3, Khet Huai Khwang, Bangkok. Hosted by JN on Airbnb. View the property details/images here.

Why did I prefer Airbnb over Hotel rooms in Bangkok?

I have listed down the factors that influenced me to go with Airbnb. These include Pricing, Group accommodation, Location & connectivity, Privacy, Basic amenities, which made it the preferred choice for stay in Bangkok.

Pricing:

I prefer Airbnb in Bangkok, mainly because it is very affordable. I got an entire 2BHK apartment on the 23rd floor of a high-rise building with a stunning view of Bangkok’s skyline from my balcony, which is an experience you can only have in developed cities like Bangkok with many skyscrapers.

Speaking of pricing, it can vary from one area to another but generally doesn’t vary much. I stayed in Soi Rama 9 Soi 3, Khet Huai Khwang, and it cost around 75-100 USD per night for a 2BHK apartment at the beginning of the season (November).

Group Accommodation: Bangkok Airbnb for Friends & family

I visited Bangkok with my 4 friends, making it a total of 5 including me. I was looking for a property where everyone could sleep comfortably.

This property in Belle Grand Rama 9 met my requirements, with 2 queen-size beds in each bedroom and an extra bed in the living room. The balcony faced the city, providing a great view.

Location & Connectivity: Khet huai khwang, Bangkok

Located in Khet Huai Khwang, Bangkok, this property is surrounded by high-rise buildings, Jodd’s Fair Night Market, and is accessible to Phra Ram 9 MRT within walking distance.

I wanted my stay to be away from the bustling tourists of the city when stepping outside, without sound pollution, and to be located near MRT/BTS. So, this was the perfect spot for me.

Privacy

Another reason is privacy. I stayed in a Bangkok Airbnb with my 4 friends, all in their mid-20s. Firstly, we didn’t want to disturb others or be disturbed by others. This was another reason to go with Airbnb.

Basic Amenities

Since I decided to go with Airbnb, I looked for properties with AC, Wifi, washing machine, TV, hair dryer, swimming pool, and gym, among other amenities. This property met all my requirements.

Another highlight is the Seven-Eleven convenience store where you can buy food and beverages, etc., which is right inside the building in the lounge area on the ground floor.

My Experience with the Airbnb property in Bangkok

Check-in/out experience

The check-in experience differs from one host to another. I shared my ID details with the host right after booking the property on the Airbnb app. The host didn’t ask for Visa details. You can check my Thailand Visa free expereince here.

The check-in time was after 2 pm. Since access was required to enter Belle Grand Rama 9 , I was instructed to go to a location outside the Belle Rama 9 building. A representative from the host’s side picked us up in a car and dropped us inside the property parking lot, handing over the key. With the key, you can access the property directly, no more formalities.

During checkout, we were told to leave the key inside the property. That’s it.

Meeting expectations: City Skyline view

My first impression, located on the 23rd floor, was stunning. When I opened the balcony curtain, I was amazed by the view of the Bangkok skyline. I could see the entire neighbourhood from the balcony, including Jodd’s Fair Night Market.

Comfortable Interiors & Facilities: Swimming pool

The interiors looked luxurious and clean, with a 65 inch TV in the living room. There was also a swimming pool which was on the 3rd floor. The property was more premium for the price that I paid.

My rating & suggestions for you

I would rate this property 4 out of 5

The reason for not giving it a 5 is that it had only a single bathroom. With only one bathroom, it was a little challenging for us to get ready in the morning. Despite this, the overall experience was great and memorable. I still miss the view from the balcony.

For you, I recommend choosing an area that is accessible to various tourist attractions. Although this property was accessible to every place in the city, I’d say it is 5-8 km away from the city centre. Again, it all depends on each person’s preferences.

Conclusion

I had a great time in Bangkok staying in this comfortable Airbnb property. If I get a chance, I’d go back again to the same property to stay. I hope this was helpful for you to decide which one you should book. Leave a comment if you find this helpful.
